DISTRICT NEWS
WAIMAUKU
[BY A CORRESPONDENT]
In order to give financial assistance to the Helensville Parochial District of the Church of England, a committee has been formed at Waimauku, and in connection with which—at the happy inspiration of Mrs Ken-Taylor—a gift afternoon tea was held at the Hall on Thursday last. The local ladies, especially those of Kumeu, responded most loyally to the invitation to bring gifts, and though it was stipulated that the value of raw material should not exceed 1/-, it was wonderful what dainty and exquisite articles deft fingers oould create, and which consequently made high prices at the sale later. Prizes were offered for the best work, and were won by Miss Peak (Waimauku), and Mrs Reynolds (Kumeu) respectively— by ballot of all present. The Hall was most tastefully decorated, and afternoon tea was provided by members of the Committee. With the fun of side-shows, and humorous competitions, interspersed with songs by Misses Fletcher and KerrTaylor, a mqst enjoyable afternoon was spent. Where so many did so much it would be invidous to particularise—= more than that Mrs Rutherford mqst ably presided over the tea table, whilst Mrs Kerr-Taylor, Miss Wilkins, Mrs Radford, and Mrs, Watt took charge of tho two fancv-.work stalls, their combined efforts resulting in the sum of £8 16s being taken.
The Vicar of Helensville, the Rev. C. J. Merton, proposed a vote of thanks to all the helpers, and the singing of the National Anthem brought a most successful afternoon to a close.
