The French Advance—Losses Fewer Than Expected— Lavish use' of Shells — Severe Fighting near Luck
The continuance of the French attack in the Champagne region has gained a footing at several points in the enemy's second defensive position, The French even passed the second line at one point, but artillery fire compelled them to retire. A German counter-attack on a section of the front was repulsed.
There has been very severe fighting eastward of Luck, in Volhynia. Although compelled to retire at some points, the Russians, by repeated attacks, dislodged the enemy from their trenches. The Russians are already benefitting by the allies success in the west.
An important Labour conference, after hearing statements on the military situation from Earl Kitchener and Mr Asquith, decided to organise a special labour recruiting campaign.
An Austro-German army is concentrating near the Servian border. German officers are said to be conferring with the Bui" garian staff in preparation for an anti-Servian campaign.
