The Kamo Springs Hotel, which the Whangarei Hospital Board pr oposed to purchase as a convalescent home for soldiers, was completely destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. Mr Montgomery, the proprietor, is a heavy loser.

The murder of a dairy farmer, John Thomas Perry, aged 45, occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning last at Ramarama, three miles from Drury. On Sunday the deceased man's widow, Amelia Perry, aged 31, mother of nine young children, was arrested on a charge ot having committed the crime. She was brought up at Auckland S'.M Court on Monday, and remanded for eight days.
The new rates for telegrams are:— For ordinary telegrams on week days 12 words or less, including address and signature : ordinary Bd, urgent 1/2, extra word Id and J^d respectively. On Snndays—urgent 2/2, ordinary 1/2, extra words 2d, aud Id each respectively.
Mrs and Mrs Cucksey of the Helensville Hotel (where they will both be missed, after to-day)/ have decided on taking to a rural life in the vicinity of Parakai. They have turned this wellknown hostelry business over to an old ex-resident in the person of Mr John Watt, who, some thirteen years ago, was Constable-in-charge at Helensville. Mr Watt, who is unfortunately afflicted with rheumatism, comes last from tho Matata Hotel, near Whakatane. He ought to get better here. There were no Springs in the old days, or at least they were not known.
