OFF TO THE FRONT

a Native settler named Aperahama Reuben, of Woodhill, has offered himself for service at the front, and has been accepted. He joined No. 1 Native Company in Auckland when the Boer War broke out, and enrolled for the Sixth Contingent, but was rejected on account •of the colour line. Later he was accepted in the Eighth Contingent, and after five weeks in camp was given a Sergeant's rank for breaking in horses, but, with five other Natives, was again rejected. Nothing daunted he joined (the Ninth, but with similar results. Returning to Hokiana, he applied for a transfer to the Hokianga Mounted Rifles. He is now married with two children, but is just as eager to serve his country, and hopes others will join him in showing their loyalty.
