The Retreat from Vilna — Russian Success near Luck — French Advance in Alsace
The military authorities at Petrograd believe that the fall of Vilna will not permanently affect the eastern campaign. The Russians, are retiring eastward from Vilna. Before leaving the city they stripped it of all metals. Both sides are using cavalry on a large scale, and it is thought that the Germans may attempt to reach Minsk, the important railway junction south-east of Vilna.
In the region of Luck, near the Galician border, the Russians ar,e pursuing the enemy, and captured a supply column. They record a success in the Pripet marshes.
The allied artillery is being used with effect in the west to disorganise the enemy's supply arrangements £and re-victualling routes. The Germans are said to be alarmed at their inability to stem the French advance in Alsace. In three weeks they lost 50,000 in attempts to retake the heights1 of the Upper Fecht.
