PATRIOTISM AT MAKARAU
[own correspondent]
The fortnight[y dance he]d on Saturday, August 21st., took the form of a " farewell" to Mr G. Hooper, who left on the following Monday for Trentham. During the course of the evening Mr A. Ranum, on behalf of Mr Hooper's many friends, presented him. with a silver wristlet-watch with illuminated hands and figures, and suitably inscribed. Mr G. Hooper returned thanks for the kindness shown to him, and hoped to give a good account of himself when he arrived at the front. Mr W. Gardner said he had just been told -that there was another young man present who was also on the eve of departure for Trentham, namely, Mr L. Turnwald, of Puhoi. He called for three cheers for Mr Turnwald and said that he was sure he would do his best to uphold the honour of the Empire and the glory of his King and Country.
