Great Battle Near Riga — German Army of One Million — Russian Stand in Galicia — South Wales Strike Settled —Favourable Signs in Balkans
A report received via Geneva states that a great battle is raging at Friedrichstadt, 72 miles east of Mitau, in the Baltic provinces, where General yon Hindenburg is desperately endeavouring to | force the passage of the Dwina. He is reported to have launched a million men against the Russian positions along the northern front. i The Italian press sees favourable signs in the Balkans, where there is increasing evidence that public opinion is growing sympathetic towards the Entente. The South Wales coal dispute has been settled, It is reported that a British submarine blew up a portion of the bridge over the Golden Horn, between Galata and Constantinople.
