talian Success—Capture Mountain Position—Germans Advancing on Vilna — Outrages in America— Powder Mills Blown up
Italians have gained a further success in the Val Sugana by the capture of the summit of Mount Cista, 8000 ft high. It is reported from Milan that the Austrians are retreating upon the nearest defences of Trent. The Austrians are also retreating in the Upper Isonzo Valley.
The Russians are still retreating north-eastward and eastward of Brest Litovsk.
In the Baltic region the Russians are presenting a strong resistance to the Germans, and at places have taken the offensive The Germans have crossed the Niemen, south of Kovno, in their advance on Vilna.
Sir John French, in his latest despatch, states that since August 18 there has been no fighting on the British front, where conditions are generally normal.
Desperate attempts to interfere with the shipment of munitions for the allies are reported from America. Mysterious fires and explosions have occurred in a number of munition factories en" gaged on orders for the allies. In an explosion of two black powder mills at Wilmington two workmen were killed.
