Hills Won and Lost — Dash of Colonial Troops — Suvla Bay Landing An official account of the operations on the Gallipoli Peninsula since August 6, which has been issued by the Government Press Bureau, discloses that though the New Zealanders and Australians, by their brilliant attack, gained the summit of Sari Bair and Chanak ridges, they were obliged to withdraw owing to the British attack from Suvla Bay _ not developing quickly enj/^h. The ground gained, hc»Civer,enabled Australasian aricrferitish lines to be established along a front of 12 miles.
A French commuique reports fresh progress by the British left wing in the northern zone during the last few days. Allied airmen dropped bombs on a Turkish landing - place north of the Narrows*, and destroyed a large transport at its moorings.
Mr Ashmead Bartlett describes the recent successful landing at Suvla Bay and the subsequent fighting. He says : '' Plans were laid with the hope of surprising the Turks and obtaining a firm foothold before they could bring up re-inforcements. It this it seems we have been successful."
