AFFORESTATION PROPOSAL

LAND ACQUIRED AT POUTO 14,000 ACRES AFFECTED

The proposal of the Government to acquire 24,000 acres of gum land at Pouto, "North Kaipara Heads', for afforestation purposes has resulted in numerous objections being lodged by gumdiggers and others. The State, however, has secured 14,000 acres of poor hill country and has now under consideration the purchase of an adjoining 6000 acres. The question of what portion of the area is suitable for gum-digging is now being considered by the Government.
