Mew Zealand's Feat — Dashing Bayonet Charge — Maoris Earn High Praise
In to-day's cablegrams Mr Ashmead Bartlett gives a stirring description of a brilliant advance made by the New Zealanders on Gallipoli Peninsula on August 7 and 8. He describes this as "the finest feat of fighting, and the highest point any troops have yet gained on the peninsula." The advance was made in connection with the new landing at Suvla Bay. On the night of the 7th the New Zealanders charged the Turkish lines with fixed bayonets and swept the Turks before them. Fighting continued during the night and throughout August 8 and until dawn on August 9. The Tavrks fought courageously, but were unable to resist the dash of the New Zealanders. The New Zealand advance resulted in the capture of a Nordenfeldt gun, two machine guns, many trench mortars, and 600 prisoners, 300 being taken by a single New Zealand battalion.
