The Colonial Soldier — How he Fights on Gallipoli—Mastery over the Turks — Heavy Fighting in Poland — Russians Retreating Slowly '*

Mr Ashmead Bartlett, in his latest despatch from Gallipoli, gives a vivid description of the situation and life of the New Zealanders and Australians. The Australasians, he states, have consolidated their position, and have obtained complete local mastery over the Turks, Their firing trenches are now practically impregnable. The Turks, since the failure of their efforts to drive the colonials into the sea, have retired to their trenches avoiding a trial of strength with their formidable adversaries. The German commanders realise that the Australasians are an ever-present source of danger, necessitating the retention of a large number of troops along their front.

A message from Paris states that an Italian officer has arrived at the British headquarters in the Mediterranean to concert measures for Italy's military and naval co - operation in the Dardanelles.

The Russians are valiantly resisting the German attack on the Narew front, in the north of Poland. Large masses of infantry have been hurled against the Russian trenches only to be flung back.

The German attacks were repulsed by the French in the Argonne. Fighting with grenades continues in the Vosges.
