DISTRICT NEWS

MAUNGATUROTO

[OWN CORRESPONDENT |

GOOD-BYE

A farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs W. G. Bilton on Friday, 30th July. Mr Bilton has disposed of his farm to Mr Murdock Mcßae, and is leaving the district. A very pleasant evening was spent by all present. Mr Collins, on behalf of the settlers, presented Mrs Bilton with a rug, and Mr Bilton with a smoker's companion, as a mark of the esteem in which they were held. ANNUAL SHOW SUSPENDED At a meeting of the members of the Agricultural Society it was unanimously decided not to hold a Show during the forthcoming season. We^ congratulate the members on their wisdom. A SAD LOSS It was with regret we learned that one of our local boys had been killed in action at the front, in the person of Trooper Howard Harrison, 11th Regiment. This is the first death amongst our own boys, although quite a number have been wounded. "While deeply sympathising with the bereaved family, we all feel proud of our fallen comrade. OFF TO THE FRONT Quite a number of our boys are leaving in the Eighth Reinforcement. We know they will do honour to our district. PLAYING THE GAME The Maungaturoto Football Club has again been successful in winning the Cup, not having lost a match. Quite a unique record has been theirs this season in that no team has crossed their line. As several of the players have been' accepted for the Re-inforcements, a dinner and social has been arranged for next Friday. May those members who are going to the front keep up the record of their Club. FAIR WEATHER We have enjoyed quite a spell of fine mild weather during the last week, which has dried the roads up splendidly.
