A NEW SHELL

A NORTH AUCKLAND INVENTOR'S CLAIM

SUBMITTED TO BRITAIN

Mr A. H. Cotton, Otakairangi (near Whangarei), has forwarded particulars of his latest shell invention to Mj: Lloyd George, and to the Premier of Australia. ±Ie says military men have expressed themselves highly in favour of the invention, and that a leading scientist of the Dominion has pronounced the opinion that tha shell possesses all the qualifications claimed for it by its inventor. The claims include the statement that the shell will prove especially effective against baihed-wire entanglements, that the spread of discharged pieces will cover a greater area and more closely than any known projectile. Finally it is claimed that it will form the most deadly aerial bomb yet conceived.

Some months ago particulars were published iv Whangarm 'Advocate' of a ring shell invented by Mr Cotton and which, he contended, had been used in this war. He sent particulars of the shell prior to the war to munitions firms in England and he was informed that the firm could not see their way to make use of it. After war broke out ha saw a descripl tion of a ring shell, which he declared to be identical with, his own in an English periodical. .* The shell was therein described as a successful new projectile being used by the British.
