Italian Criuser Sunk — Submarined in Adriatic — Roumania Nearing War
The Italian cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi (7294t0n5) has been sunk by an Austrian submarine in the Adriatic. The warship was attacked after operating off Cattaro, where the Austrian fleet is sheltering. Most of the crew are reported to have been saved.
Italian naval activity in the Adriatic has been marked during the past fortnight.
On land the Italians are attacking vigorously along the Isonzo front. Several lines of Austrian armoured trenches were captured on Sunday, and 2000 prisoners were taken.
A French communique states that the German attacks west and south-west of Souchez were repulsed. The Germans bombarded two points on the Flanders front.
The Austro-Hungarian rulers have been considering whether to send Roumania an ultimatum or a declaration of war. The Premier of Bulgaria says the Bulgarian army is ready, but Bulgaria must have Macedonia to induce her to enter the war.
