HOSPITAL SHIP CONCERT
SOME little time since a committee o local residents was set up for the purpose of raising funds for the Hospital Ship and Wounded Soldiers Relief Fund. The result of the Committee's labours was shown on Friday evening last, when a capital programme was presentedNotwithstanding the vile weather the Hall was comfortably filled, and the Fund will benefit to the extent of something over £25. ,
The programme was as follows:— Song, " Brittania," school children; song " solveig," Mrs Bellini; song, " Give me a Penny," Logan Dye ; solo, " Mifivariy," Miss Waddell; pianoforte duet in D Major, Misses Sinclair and Henley ; solo, " Bring my Roses," Mrs Bellini; song and chorus, " Dixie," school boys ; vocal duet, " Venetian Seng," Mi ss Waddell and Hardy; song, "El Bacio," Mrs Bellini; Japanese Fan Song, school girls" An interval, and then a farce, " Ici on Parle Francais," by the XXX Dramatic Company. Every item produced went off with vim, the encores being loud and prolonged.
A bountiful and dainty supper was provided by the ladies of the district, and a squad sf flower girls under the Captain Miss Drinnan supplied all and sundry (having the necessary nimble threepence to spare) with charming buttonhole bouquets. A considerable amount was raised from the sale of badges, favours, Belgium ' babies * and sweets by squads organised by Mrs R. Drinnan and Mrs W. Goodwin.
The chairman, F. Dye, Esq., in a feeling speech, warmly thanked all those who had so generously responded to the appeals made, also the school teachers for their trouble taken in training the children ; and the other performers. PATRIOTIC GUILD The local ladies meet every Thursday afternoon and sew, etc., for the comfort of the soldiers. These meetings are held at the members' homes and at a different house every week, when afternoon tea is dispensed. A fee of 6d a week is charged, but much more has been freely given. A similar meeting is held at Upper Waiwera every Thussday, at Mrs R. Howell's house. THE ROADS The roads are cutting up now in this district; and though the weather is not cold, yet we are feeling the wet side of a winter season.
