FRIDAY
Success near Ypres — British Bayonet Attack — Italy's Rapid Progress — Fight foi Mountain Passes
The Chateau Hooge, south-east of Ypres, which has been held by the Germans since their advance a month ago, under the cover of gas, has been recaptured by the British at the point of the bayonet. The French have repulsed a counterattack in " the labyrinth " near Neuville St. Vaast, where they have lately made considerable gains. "Eye-witness," with the British headquarters, states that the British hold their own well in hand grenade warfare, and have inflicted heavy losses on the enemy by this form of attack.
The Italians are rapidly mastering the mountain passes along the Austrian frontier. Austrian troops ' guarding the Monte Croce Pass, on the frontier of Eastern Tyrol, in an endeavour to stem the Italian advance, made five attacks, but each time they were hurled back in ' disorder, and were ultimately routed from the pass. On the Friuli frontier the Italians have entered Austrian territory north of Gorz, and are established on the slopes of Monte Nero, in the Julian Alps.
