—Kaipara Defence Club—
On Saturday, May 8, a rifle match of the above Club was held atKaukapakapa. The day was fine, and there was a number of the public present. The match was for an oak and silver mounted biscuit barrel, presented by the President, Mr F. W. Stewart. Twenty-six men competed, and the shooteng was good. Mr J. Naughton succeeded in winning the prize, with Mr L. McLean as runnerup. The ladies as usual, were in evidence, and refreshments were handed round, which were enjoyed and apprecited by all. —Belgian Relief Fund — A public meeting was held in-the hall on Friday evening, to consider how to assist Belgium. —Chaff Cutting.— The farmers are busy cutting oaten chaff now, and carts and waggons are seen on the road piled up with sacks of chaff. The crops were not so good as usual, owing to the dry summer, but the straw was clean and fine, and the chaff looks good and smells just the thing May there be no thin horses this winter. —Rain. — Nice rain fell here on Tuesday afternoon and fallowing days, and the weather is warm. This followed a few frosty mornings.
