GOLF.

The opening of the Helensville Golf Club took place last Saturday afternoon under perfect weather conditions.

The president, Mr Thos. Elliott, in his opening speech, congratulated the club on commencing with such a large membership, 46, thus making it compare more than favourably with any country club.

Mr Elliott then drove off the first ball, and declared the links opened. The afternoon was occupied with a foursome game, and although most of the players had never previously handled a club, the outing was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Quite a number of members friends were present, and afternoon tea provided.

Too much cannot be said of the president, Mr T. Elliott, who has so generously offered the club the free use of his

property,

Mr Hood, golf professional of Auckland, came up on a business trip, and gave quite a number of the new members a lesson in the art of playing. He has kindly donated two clubs for a competition, one for ladies and one for gents.

It has been decided to award the prizes to the players with the best net score for nine holes. The competition commences on Saturday next, and full particulars will be posted on the notice board in the pavilion.
