German Line Broken — British Advance in France — Allies Closing on La Bassee — Ground Gained in Flanders — Italians Clamour for War

Sir John French, reports that the First British Army has broken the German line over the greater part of a two-mile fron^ north of La Bassee. By an attack at mid-night the British carried two successive lines of German breastworks on a front of 800 yds. , At dawn, another attack was made further south, resulting in 1200 yds of German front trenches being captured. Pushing rapidly on, the British crossed the Festubert-Quinque Road, which brings them within three miles of La Bassee, the main German stronghold in this region.

While the British are successfully advancing upon La Bassee from the North, the French are progressing in the South.

In Flanders the Germans are being driven from Steenstrarte, their last foothold on the western side of the Ypres Canal.

The Daily Mail reports that a squadron of 27 British and French aeroplanes attacked a Zeppelin near Ypres. The Zeppelin was destroyed and its crew killed. The allies lost two machines and their pilots. '

The Italian Ministry is to retain office, the King having refused to accept the resignation of Signor Salandra. The clamor for war among the Italian people is growing.
