OUR ROLL OF HONOUR

WORD came to hand on Monday last that among the killed at the recent fight at the Dardanelles were:

Lieut. Thomas G. N. Screaton, 15th North Auckland Company, Auckland Infantry Battalion, His next of kin is Mrs F. Carling. Karangahake (mother). Lieut. Screaton was a brother to Mr Reg. Screaton, storekeeper, of Helensville South, with whom we all sincerely sympathise. Deceased last year assisted in the store for a short time, but when the war broke out he immediately volunteered his services.

Lieut. Noel Steadman, 15th, North Auckland Company, Auckland Infantry Battalion. Next of kin, T. H. Steadman, solicitor •Whangarei (father). Many of us are intimately acquainted with Lieut.-Col. T. H. Steadman, late Mayor of Whangarei.

Later advices to hand inform

us that Lieutenant J. William Fletcher (late Sergt.-Major in charge of the Helensville District and a most popular officer among all classes here) has been wounded. LETTER OF CONDOLENCE Town Board Office, Heleasville, May 18, 1915. The following letter has been sent to Mrs F. Carling, the mother of Lieutenant Screaton, killed in action :— Mrs F. Carling, Karangahake, . Dear Madam, —I am instructed by my Board to tender you their sincere sympathy in the sad loss you have sustained by the death of your son, Lieut. Thomas Screaton, when nobly fighting for his King and country. During his short residence in Helensville, he became endeared to everyone with whom he came in contact, by his manly straightforward conduct, and we feel his death Js a loss to Helensville, as well as to yourself.—Yours sincerely,

H. W. Stringer, Town Clerk.
