AUSTRIA SUING FOR PEACE

THE ECHO |(great and small), whatever the Powers might agree to, would not recognise. such a sudden proposition as allowing Austria to crawl out of the greatest war ever brought about, and that through the intrigue and machination in July last byAustria herself. To cut it short, we would here blurt out " not much!" No, let Francis Josef and his bosom chum, the wretched Kaiser, who have caused widesspread rapine and murder among innocent people, ruined most sacred and beautiful art buildings, made hundreds of thousands homeless, orphans, cripples, and widows ; devastated miles upon miles of smiling country, villages and towns, and the ruthless expenditure of hundreds of millions of money, just fight it out to a finish as did the " white hope" the other day. A niceJ time to sue for a "separate.''! peace, after all this. Lovely for Austria to want to be left alone and to be able to look on its dominions unscathed and whole. And America is to be asked by the Pope to negotiate the question. But let America mind its own business, and look carefully after the almighty dollar, as Brother Jonathan has been doing all along. After all being said and done, we can safely let dear old England and her clever statesmen see a hole through a ladder and compel justice. If there is going to be Peace there will be Peace and no half measures. Russia will also see to this.
