Terror in Hungary - The Russian Invasion — Allied Progress in France — Serbo-Italian Agreement— Eitel Friedrich Interned
m .The latest report of the fighting m the Carpathians states that the Russians, having captured the Uszok Pass, are pouring into Hungary. The Hungarians are I tilled with terror at their ap- \ proach. The gravity of the Austrian position in the Carpathians is admitted in Vienna. Along the western battlefront, - fro'Lic-the, Oisne to the Moselle, greataetivity Is reported. Beyond^tlie Meuse the allies are successfully pursuing the offensive. A great v bound forward " in the region of Eparges, between Verdun and St. Mihiel, is reported from Paris. The Germans vigorously counter-attacked but failed to regain the ground lost. East of Verdun the allies have captured two hills and gained more trenches. A German detachment succeed ed in crossing the Yser in Flanders,, but was driven back I by the Belgians. ' The armed liner, v Prince Eitel Friedrich, which was ordered to leave Newport, U.S.A., has been interned, her commander preferring this to facing the British warships, which were waiting outside. SATURDAY Italian Fleet Ready — Russia's Carpathian Victory — Allied Gains in France It is regarded as significant that the Italian Fleet has suddenly been concentrated at ports near the entrance to the Adriatic Sea. It is reported * that the Kaiser personally visited the Emperor Franz Josef and vainly tried to persuade Austria to secure Italy's neutrality by territorial concessions. The Austro-German forces are said to have recognised that in spite of their enormous sacrifices of troops the advance of the Russians through the Carpathians has not been checked. The Russians report that the enemy's violent attacks at two points have ceased. The Russians claim that mines which they laid in the Bosphorus have sunk seven Turkish gunboats and damaged two cruisers. A French communique states that the allies have made considerable gains at many points during the past few days. In addition to evicting the Germans , from strong positions, they have *W defeated violent counter-attacks. The Germans have suffered enormous losses. MONDAY Dardanelles Attack —French Landing Force — Important Success in France — Russians Fighting in Hungary A French military force, intended for service in the attack on the Dardanelles, has been disembarked at Alexandria, and is preparing to co-operate with a British expeditionary force and the allied fleet. The Loire'plateau, an important position in the Eparges region south-east of Verdun, dominating the plain of Woevre, has been captured by the allies after , determined • bayonet assaults. Desperate German attacks at other points in the Meuse region have been repulsed, the allies everywhere holding the ground they have gained. The Russians advancing over the Carpathians are now masters of the principal mountain chain in th&>£icinity of the Dukla and Uszjjt passes. Already fighting is^Hfcjig place in Hungarian territory. German families are hurriedly leaving Italy. TUESDAY Austria Seeks Peace — Reported Overture to Russia — Turkey's Terms to Germany — Separate Peace Threatened According to the Bourse Gazette, of. Petrograd, the Emperor' has opened negotiations with Russia to obtain honourable terms of peace. The fear of irreparable devastation to Hungary is said to have dictated this action. : y A message from Sofia states that yon der Goltz, who is re- ; turning to Constantinople, was sent to Berlin to demand that 300,000 Germans should be sent across the Danube to force a passage through Servia and to intimidate Bulgaria. Turks and Greeks living in Thrace, near the Bulgarian frontier, are reported to be leaving their homes, fearing a Bulgarian attack on Turkey.
THE WEEK'S SUMMARY.
Fearing a rising of the Old Turk Party in Constantinople, Enver Pasha, Turkish Minister for War, is reported to have removed ex-Sultan Abu I Hamid to Smyrna. The Austro German forces opposed to the Russians have been repulsed along the entire length of the principal chain of the Carpathians in the region of the Russian offensive. The Kronprinz Wilhelm, the last of the German commerce destroyers known to be at large, has arrived ,at Hampton Roads, where it will probably intern. Rumours of a naval action off the Norwegian coast are current in Copenhagen. Messages from Bergen, in Norway, state that heavy firing was heard on Wednesday, WEDNESDAY Violent Battle — Fighting in the Carpathians — Austrians Reinforced—German Defeats in France — Twe more Ships torpedoed It is officially reported from Petrograd that a violent battle has developed in the region of the Uszok Pass, which the Austrians still hold. The Austrian Army, which has been re-inforced, is threatening the left flank of the Russian forces in the Eastern Carpathians. The Paris Temps, reviewing the situation in the Carpathians, states that an 80-days' battle has ended in the Russians advancing along an 80' mile front to within a three-days' march of the Hungarian plains. Two German attempts to retake Beau Sejour, between Rheims and Argonne, have been repulsed with heavy losses to the enemy. The Germans concentrated large forces and attacked the French trenches four miles north of Albert. Their repeated and determined attempts to break through were repulsed with great slaughter. Two more British ships have been torpedoed by German submarines. Neither is reported to have been sunk. THURSDAY Carpathians Battle — The Enemy's Enormous Losses — Destroyers in Dardanelles — Battleships Engage Forts There has been desperate fighting in the Carpathians, where the Russians are now faced by five Austrian armies and seven German army corps. Destroyers, scouting, made a dash into the Dardanelles and penetrated to a considerable distance, while the battleship London engaged the forts. New dispositions of the enemy's artillery were discovered. A French warship, assisted by seaplanes, bombarded a Tuskish encampment near the coast of Palestine.
