'DOWN WITH WAR' RAISED

AUSTRIAN OVERTURES TO

RUSSIA

THE Austrian people, tired of privations and reverses, are agitating for a stoppage of the war. Violent; demonstrations occurred in several cities. In Vienna ,there were shouts of " Down with the war and army ! Down with the Generals!" Attempts to stone the War Office were, made. The police and troops charged, wounding several and arresting many. The Moscow newspaper Rusky Slowo says that after the failure of the Austrian Emperor's appeal to the Pope to overcome the Kairer's obstinate desire to continue the war regardless^ of consequences, Francis VlHjbph. asked the Pope to try to conclude a separate peace with Russia, Austria's terms including the surrender of Bosnia, Herzegovina and Galicia. In Russian military circles it is not believed that a separate peace is practicable while the Austro-German armies are interwoven and Berlin is directing the plan of campaign in the Carpathians.
