MAKARAU

The evening party, given by Mr and Mrs Elvin, in honour of their son's twenty-first birthday, was marred to a certain extent by the heavy rain which set in early on the morning of the 26th ult. and continued until late in the afternoon. This prevented a number of ladies, who intended driving from the surrounding district, from j being present. In spite of this, however, there were guests present to the number of sixty, who all thoroughly enjoyed ■ themselvesThe Hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and pink lillies. A delicious supper was sat down 10, and tbfe cakes pastry, jellies, fruit Salads, and a beautifully decorated birthday cake (the work of Mrs E. E. Smith) were greatly appreciated. Messrs C.. and T. Hooper (piano and violin) played a good selection of dance music, and the duties of M.Cs. were successfully carried out by Messrs C. Burger and G. Hooper. Before dispersing the company gatheed round Mr H. Elvin and sang " He's a Jolly Good Fellow," followed by three cheers. Cheers were also given for Mr and Mrs Elvin; Presents were numerous.
