HELENSVILLE SPORTS
TO THE EIJITOK.
SIR, —Several letters have been received at the office of the Northen Athletic Union, Auckland, complaining of the action of some Helensville people who are . said to intend holding sports about Easter— not under the jurisdiction or authority of the above Union. So far I have not seen any public announcement on the matter. In fact, there are 24 sports fixtures to be held within the next six weeks, a J^. all are under the North^jjF Athletic Union, which is now' registered under the Act, 'Vto control athletic, cycling, piping, dancing and axemen's events in and throughout the Province of Auckland." The present Executive, of which I have the honour of being President, has been in office now for eight years, and if we have in the course of our duty on behalf of clean sport, disqualified some competitors, I will be sorry if a club can be found in the Province that will cater for those under the ban. I am sure the public of Helensville would not do so in the case of disqualified jockeys. We caiinot imagine the townspeople of Helensville supporting such a sports meeting. Such affairs as the above will not popularise the place. Fully 97 per cent of the competitors in the Province are registered with the Northern Athletic Union. This list includes all the leading peformers such as Kinsey, Mills, McManns, O'Connell, Ward, Adlam, Holden, .. Mason, Brennans, Bouvaird, Wallbank, etc., etc. In last week's issue, of the Northern Athletic Union's official Gazette the following notice appears: " Timely warning is now given that there will be no sports on Easter Monday at Helensville under the Northern Union Rules, that date having been given to Papakura Athletic Club. Should any attempt be made at Helensville to hold sports on that day, it will be re" garded by the Union as in opposition to Papakura, and the full penalty under the registered rules will be imposed. No application for removal of disqualification will be received or considered by the Union from any competitor taking part in such a meeting at Helensville. This rule also applies to any competitor already, under the ban." I think, sir, that the above warning is as plain as it can be made. Thanking you in anticipation.—• I am, etc.,
T. P. GILFEDDER, President. Auckland, March 3, 1915.
