WEDNESDAY

The German attempt to advance on Warsaw has been checked. Fighting is still in progress to the west and northwest of Warsaw. The Russians have captured strong positions at Kamion, 25 miies south-east of Plock. A desperate engagement is proceeding at Sierpe, in the north of Russian Poland. The Turkish army which attacked the Suez Canal is now in full retreat. Small rearguards are quite 20 miles from the canal, and the main bodies further eastward. Over 500 of the attackers were killed and 652 taken prisoners, including 100 wounded. As a result of violent infantry fighting in the Argonne the Germans have occupied a few points in the allies' line. At La Boisselle, north of Albert, they made an unsuccessful attack and left 200 dead on the field.
