A terrific battle is being fought in Poland. The reports state General yon Hindenberg, who is in command of the^-'German armies, has abandoned military science, and is relying solely on a reckless expenditure of lives and a hurricane of shells, in a desperate effort to force his way to Warsaw. Along a front of only seven miles, 140,000 German infantry and 100 batteries were employed. They advanced 16 deep. Several divisions were massed in such "solid formation that the Germans christened them " divisions of death." The Russian artillery were engaged for a day in unceasing slaughter. They then counter-attacked, and forced the Germans across the Rawka River. The Minister for Defence has received information that all the New Zealand infantry took part in the engagement against the Turks at the Suez Canal. The German announcement warning neutrals that there will be danger to their shipping in British waters after the 18th, has aroused indignation in neutral countries. Dutch shippers are calling a conference, and it is propose 4 that the neutral gauntries should jointly protest through the United States."
