BUGGY ACCIDENT
AN accident, which resulted rather unhappily for two Aucklanders, happened on the road from. Whakapirau, near Maungaturoto on Friday last. The occupants of the buggy were ( Messrs Christie (Dalgety's auctioneer), W. H. Bennett (representative of the "Farmer"), Shaw and Bowmar, who left towards Maungaturoto to catch the train for Auckland. The reins broke and the horses being out of control, dashed down a hill, the vehicle overturning at the bottom. Dr Mercer was summoned to attend the two injured men, who were taken to Helensville by launch. On Saturday morning they were brought to the Auckland Hospital by train. ' The four men were injured, Mr Christie having his leg broken near the thigh, and Mr Bennett sustaining a nasty fracture below the knee. The other two escaped with lesser injuries, Mr Shaw having his instep and heel rather badly crushed, while Mr Bowmar was considerably lacerated about the face. MrG. Coates.M.P was amongst the first party to arrive on the scene and he supplied first aid to the injured men. Subsequently Messrs Christie and Bennett were carried the distance of three miles back to Whakapirau, where Mr Morgan's launch from Batley was requisitioned, and "the sufferers brought to Helensville. Dr Max Meinhold was notified by telegram of the accident and was asked to be in attendance at about 1.30 a.m., but after waiting on the Helensville wharf until past 3 o'clock Saturday morning, the launch not arriving, he returned to his couch. The launch however, arrived at about 6 a.m.
