THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO With Which Is Incorporated "The Kaipara Advertiser & Waitemata Chronicle." Helensville, Friday, Jan, 15, 1915. UNRULY BRITISHERS
True the Echo has no great lo ye for umiaturalized subjects —especially Germans—in these times of horrible warfare, but we have every respect for those who reside amongst us here in Helensville, and those we have known in other parts of the Dominion, as inoffensive, respectable, obliging and always courteous German born subjects, who have made this their adopted country, and the dear old flag of England their guide and protection. It is, therefore, with no small amount of concern and disgust we read the other day of the unruly J dunderheads who in Gisbome, jon New Year's Eve, wrecked | the shop of a naturalised German named Wohusiedler,-] when stones and bottles were j thrown in volleys at regular. intervals and as each pane of glass went the crowd cheered lustily and by one o'clock next morning the promises were completely wrecked, overy panel jof glass m the buiu.iug, being] smashed t« splinters, while the] interior of the sV>[) W also] knocked about-. where is the sense of a mob who wreck a man's house because he happens to be of a different nationality ? Is this British fair play that we hear so much boast about ? E vevy man's neutrality should be respected, and no "whiteman" should tolerate vicious treatment at the hands of the mob simply because his country is at war with England, We do hope for the sake of decency and fair play that at least some of the Gisborne mob will be bronght to book, and that the man outraged will be reinstated in his business and standing as the peaceful, good citizen he always has been.
