About a month ago Miss Laura Shanks when out riding met with what might have been a serious accident. While cantering along the road the horse seemed to cross its legs and fell, throwing its rider. Fortunately Miss Shanks got clear of the horse and was not seriously hurt, though she narrowly escaped breaking her arm, it being severely bruised and she suffered greatly from shock.
The same lady had a very sensational ride last Wednesday evening, when on the way home from a dance with her brother and another gentlemen. This gentlemen was leading a rather frisky horse which has seldom been ridden. He asked Miss Shanks to ride it, and after some persuasion she mounted tho frisky steed, which took fright at the skirts and bolted for about a mile along the road until it was exhausted. Luckily Miss Shanks is a good rider, and pluckily managing the reins, kept from being thrown, and is to be congratulated on her escape. The two gentlemen followed in great anxiety, and were much relieved when they met horse and rider, little the worse for their adventure.
The above lady's father (MiGavin Shanks) has been in the Auckland District Hospital for the past seven weeks, suffering from a leg fractured in two places, but he is now progressing favourably, and all being well he will return home shortly.
There is to he a Patriotic Concert held in this district shortly, and it is to be hoped fine weather will prevail; and that there will be a large attendance.
