THE AVONDALE RAGES

KUDOS FOR LOCAL MAN

It is not often we refer to racing matters in these columns for the very unfortunate reason that there are so very few racing sports in our immediate surroundings, but when a local man such as Helensville's popular racehorse owner, pulls off such an important event in Auckland as the Avondale Guineas of 22550v5., we are here to give him kudos, and hope that his shadow may never grow less. In Mullingar—thank goodness this is not German —Mr James Hand has a splendid three-year-old, and, we prophesy, a successful career before him. The following is the result of the Guineas, run on Saturday last at Avondale and, needless to say, Mr Hand is proud to bring home and display to his friends the beautifully worked badge for Mullingar:—

Avondale Guineas of 225sovs ; second horse. 40sovs; third horse lOsovs. Breeder of winner 25sovs out of stake. For three-year-olds.

Mr Jas. Hand's b c Mullingar, 3yrs. by Marble Arch—Romola, Bst 101b (Deeley) 1

Mr F. Hall's b fCastalir, 3yrs, Bst 51b (Buchanan) 2

Mr F. Marshall's eh c Bedford, 3yrs, Bst 101b (Conquest), 3.

Also ran : Ulster, Bst 51b (Flanagan) ; Marble Star, Bst 51b (E. R. Brown).

Mullingar was favourite. Ulster caused some delay at the post, and finally formed the rearguard of the party as they were released. Marble Star piloted Mullingar and Castalia round the back. Deeley was not exerting himself at this stage, but before the home turn was reached he moved up on the favourite alongside Marble Star, and entered the straight going comfortably, with Bedford and Castalia in hot pursuit. But their efforts were of no avail, for over the business end the sturdy little son of Marble Arch responded to the demand, and ran past the deciding line with a two and a-half lengths advantage over Castalia, who finished stronger than Bedford. Time, lmin 3-ssecs.
