CUT OUR PACIFIC CABL-1 AT FANNING ISLAND | ADVICE was received by thjfl Postmaster-General on Tuesdafl morning that the Pacific Board'J cable had been cut at Fanning Island. The information received at Auckland was as follows :— " 3.15 a.m. (Fanning Island time) Superintendent Fanning Island reports : ' Large steamer approaching, probably Nunr berg.' " 4.25 a.m.: ' Large three-, funnel raan-o'-war flying the French flag. Am going off to her.' " Superintendent at Suva reports unable to get Fanning Island since 6 a.m., although tests are normal." Allowing for the differences of time between the stations it would appear that Z IA hours elapsed between the sending of the final message by the superintendent at Fanning Island and the interruption of the cable. There is no apparent explanation for the absence of further warn: ings regarding the movements qf the strange warship during this interval.
