WAIROA V. KAIPARA
On Saturday last the Northern Wairoa Junior Rep 3. visited Helensville and played a match with our Seniors, to whom, they suffered defeat by 9 points to 6. The weather and ground were perfect. The attendance "on the ground" was only medium, the takings £2 14s. There was a large number on the road, having a free show. These " sports " objected to paying the shilling, and for spite barracked for Wairoa throughout the game. They, however, were informed that their support was not wanted by the visitors, seeing that they were too mean to support their own Union. THE PLAY Wairoa won the toss, and their forwards soon had the home team on the defensive. Whilst holding the locals in their own territory, Harvey (Wairoa) marked in a very handy position and Parore, taking the kick, brought success within five minutes of play. Even play resulted for some time. The visiting forwards were far superior to our pack in the loose, but the home backs easily excelled the visitors. After a nice piece of work and plenty of dash, Fletcher evened up the score, and half-time sounded shortly after. On resuming the home backs set up a strong attack. Hart, securing from the scrum, shot out to Fletcher, who, after beating the opposing five-eighths, sent on to McLeod, who in turn made a good run, but hung on too long, and a good chance was missed. Despite this, however, Fletcher again scored for Kaipara, which was not converted. The Wairoa boys then came away, and from a scrum well out in j Kaipara ground Brydon secured and working the blind side, scored a very pretty try. Parore made a very good but unsuccessful attempt at converting. On changing for the last spell the local backs got going several times, butsomethirig went wrong just at the critical stage in each attack. G. Bradly, who had been putting in a good bit of work, was compensated for his labour and scored the third try for' Kaipara, which was not converted. There was evidently some difference over this kick at goal, as the Wairoa line umpire gave it as a goal, but the referee did not think so. Time sounded with the Wairoa forwards | hotly attacking. For the visitors, Pitkithley (captain), Campbell and Brydon (backs), Seymour, French and Winters (forwards) were most conspicuous ; whilst for the home team each did his best, those worthy of mention being Lang, Fletcher, Hart (captain), V. McLeod (backs), and Teasdale, Bradly, C. Russell (forwards). Mr Jas. Downer made as usual a capable referee. NOTES After the match the visitors were entertained at dinner at the Kaipara Hotel. Mr Jas. McLeod, President of the local Union, presided, the toasts of the evening were : " The King," by the President ; " The Visiting Team," (coupled with the captain, Mr Pitkethley), by Mr Hart. Responded to by Mr Pitkethley, who in turn proposed the toast of "The kaipara Rugby Union." Responded to by Mr C. White, secretary, who proposed the toast of the "N. Wairoa Rugby Union," coupled with the name of the visiting representative Mr Matheson (manager of the team). The Chairman then called on the player who had during the afternoon kicked the football into a lady's umbrella, to propose the toast of " The Ladies." Mr C. McLeod confessed and did the necessary, which was responded to by a "ladies" man from the Wairoa. The " Host and Hostess," proposed" by the President, and responded to by Mr T. McEwin. The visiting team was then entertained by the management of the Star Pictures. The party left Helensville on their return journey at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
