SOMETHING TO BOAST ABOUT
Captain A. Coutts, of Northern Wairoa who is attached to the mobilisation camp staff as assistant ordnance officer, is in the unique position of being the only New Zealander to hold the Queen's scarf. At the time of the Boer war the late Queen Victoria personally knitted some four scarves to be presented to the men for special services at the front. In one of the engagements with the Boers Capt. Coutts displayed conspicuous bravery by rescuing a wounded man under heavy fire, and received as reward the coveted distinction.
