FOOTBALL

HELENSVILLE V. DARGAVILLE

ON Friday afternoon last our representatives left for Dargaville in quest of the Harding Shield. Many attemps were made to get away owing to the picked team not turning, but finally the steamer cast off at 6.15 p.m. with no more than the bare 15 players aboard. No surprise would have been shown in Helensville on Saturday night if word had come that Wairoa had beaten our boys by over 25 points, for they were terribly out of form. However, results showed that our boys did vei-y well, the final score being 14 to nil against them, which, big as it may seem, is not so much, considering it is the first time we have played the Wairoa Seniors, and they, a strong team.

Every man of the Helensville team played right out to the whistle sounding, and worthy of special mention are Snell, Hart, Whiteman, V. McLeod, Taylor, and Fletcher.

The play was very even for some time after commencement and several good rallies were made by both teams. Wairoa then became aggressive and four tries were scored in quick succession, the first one only being converted. With the last quarter to go our boys rallied, and Lang had three unsuccessful tries to draw blood for Kaipara. He is to be congratulated on his determination to cross the line, for in his first attempt he was just shouldered out at the corner, then a collision with the referee lost him the second chance, and finally he did get over but unluckily lost the ball.

After the match the team was entertained at Thompson's Hotel and the Royal Rink Pictures, everyone enjoying themselves thoroughly. The team returned home on Sunday.
