PAY-UP! IN GOOD TASTE

GRANTED that the Premier, Hon. Mr Massey, talks of raising two millions for the Dominion's War Fund — all round — and it is almost certain to come off, and that the liberal-minded and even the poor (who can scarcely afford it) contribute, there are hundreds of parsimonious colonists who have plenty and to spare that plank down perhaps a hundred pounds, whereas they could easily spare thousands. There are also many to our personal knowledge in another place who have thousands, and are making a show of planking down a paltry five-pound note. Now, how are we going to get at these beggarly misers ? Our Legislative must either create a War Tax or else double the Income Tax to get* at the pot-bellied capitalists. It is not fair for every town and village and every settlement to be giving to their uttermost farthing, unless the FAT MAN is made to " fork out."
