Bridget, the new general, was told by her mistress to pare the potatoes while she went out to order the joint for dinner, When the mistress returned with the meat, she was astonished to find Bridget sitting on the kitchen floor with dozens of potatoes set out round her in couples. "Good gracious, Bridget," she cried " whatever are you doing ?"
1 Why," replied Bridget dolefully, « you told me to pair 'em, but, oh, please mum I can't find a mate for this little 'un "
