THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONSVILLE," HELENSVILLE, FRIDAY, JULY 24, 1914. THE DAIRY INDUSTRY

THE dairy farmers of this widelyknown and flourishing district met in full force last week, in the Star Theatre, Helensville, to discuss the third annual report and balance sheet of the Kaipara Cooperative Dairy Factory Co. Ltd., which in due course met with a volley of approval and smiling faces. Though some figures have been previously quoted herein, for the sake of "outsiders" it is as well that we quote a few more, in order to show them the prime condition in which this young company finds itself in- —-the shareholders themselves were supplied with the full balance sheet, therefore it is needless to uncfuly prolong this article.

The company has been in existence for but three years, and commenced with 112 suppliers. Two years later these increased to more than double, namely, 241, while for the 1911-12 season 992,4731bs of cream was received ; this was increased to over a million and a half lbs in the 1913----14 season (1,555,533 lbs), thus showing the wonderful progress made in the production of the district and its capabilities. The Helensville factory is easily the second largest in whole of the North, and the most successful of any, because it is but a youngster in years, yet it is scarcely to be credited that three years ago there were pessimists by the score. But by leaps and bounds the company has made good to such an extent that we can safely predict greater and greater success as the years roll by, in fact it'is hard to say what the Kaipara Dairy Factory may develop into ; and that it is one of the principal factors to our very existence goes without saying.

The manufacturing account for year ending 31st May, 1914, shows butter sales at £31,184 13s; on hand, £958 2s 6d ; and buttermilk, £12; making a total of £32,154 15s Gd. Against this, with all the expenses of working, fuel, stores, butter boxes, wages, etc., together with over £24,400 advances on butter-fat, we have a total of £27,173 18s sdi leaving a gross profit carried to profit and loss account of £4,980 17s Id. Coming to the profit and loss account for the same period, we find the net profit to be £4,139 3s 7d ; this, with £101 3s Id brought forward from previous year, made a total of £4,240 6s Bd, thus allowing the company to pay bonuses of l^d and l^d, after having paid 10Hd per lb for butter-fat during the shipping season, and lO^d advanced for April and May, being a total of Is \idi » and ll^d respectively. This "is slightly different to the old days when farmers received 4d, sd, and 6d per lb, and the public had to consume a very inferior, rank article.

The figures in connection with the detailed accounts are no sinecure, and may be gauged from the auditor's fee being fifteen guineas. Therefore the shareholders have not only to be complimented on striking a five per cent dividend and .'the bonus of l^d and ly|d, but also on having an efficient secretary, a manager who knows his business, and a chairman and directorate whose sole aim is for the benefit of all concerned-
