Simple and Smart Mantelpiece Cover.

Simplicity is often the essence of smartness, and decorations overloaded with ornamentation never look so well as something simple and smart. With many of t"he modern mantelpieces, especially those made of iron, a cover of some kind for them is

very necessary, and boards for fixing over them can be purchased in almost any size at a small cost. Prior to fixing it in its place, the mantelboard must, of course, be covered and draped, and in the accompanying sketch may be seen an exceedingly handsome drapery, though quite simple and easy to carry out. It is made of dull green silk, and and it should be cut out in the shape shown in Diagram A, the portion indicated by B corresponding in size with the surface of the board. D is that portion which hangs down in front, and C C the two side pieces. It will be noticed that it is cut into curves at the c(\ge, and above each curve is a Tudor rose, worked in silk of an ,an old-gold colour. The fringe in colour harmonises with the material, but it is headed with narrowgold braid, and between each curve there are two gold tassels. In making the Tudor roses on the silk, in the first place a square should be drawn, with a small circle in the centre, and then the lines running between the corners, with the result shown in Diagram E. After that it is an easy matter to complete the design in the manner illustrated by Diagram F. This cover could, of course, be carried out equally well in many other combinations of colour, and though green and gold will harmonise with til most any other colour, it might be desirable in some instances to select the tints to harmonise with the general scheme of colour of the room in which the cover is to take

its place
