NOTES ON THE GAME
[BY DROP KICK]
As predicted last week, a good game waswitnessed between Suburbs (Parakai) and Helensville. The ground being slippery, likewise the ball, made play difficult, but notwithstanding the state of the ground many good flashes of Rugby were witnessed. Suburbs put in a solid fifteen and for their first match played well. I expect to see them keep, Waimauku busy when the two teams come together,
Eor Suburbs McLeod, on the was prominent, his attacking being good, and on many occasions he proved a hard man to stop once under steam. Bradly, "as %, gave a good display and saved his side repeatedly. Suburb's \i played a fair game, but wants to-keep his place. Suburb's forwards all'worked hard, and to single them out would nqt he fair. Nex't week I will deal individually with the Suburb's team, so what faults the players have they had better rectify next Saturday,
Helensville showed better combination and with a few exceptions all played well. Of the forwards MacKenzie (wing) played a heady game and worked hard. Porter showed up prominently, his tackling being beautiful, a thing the majority should learn. Jim Hafford was a solid toiler right through, the j game, and, with Teasdale who, was a g.-eat battler, headed many forward - rushes. W. , Baker, who donned the! jersey for Helensville, is an, old South Auckland player and he showed he could still raise a gallop ; he worked * well, but I should like to see him in the locks position. G. Garry more than surprised me ; l^s work in the pack was
good, and his play in the loose splendid. J. Morris uses his weight in the pack but has a tendency to break from the scrum too soon. Dormer played hard, but is inclined to stand off instead of getting into the thick of it. The backs were all pretty safe. Jack Masters behind the pack played a great game, and the try Viv McLeod scored was through Jack's work. Viv McTw>d' ' played safe, but he wants to remenuier he has backs behind him; individual • ■ play is all right, but it will not help the combination of his backs. " Viv, take note." Geo. Masters, for his first attempt^ in the Y% line, played well and^the try !jjh^ he scored was a good piece of work jHH with a little more knowledge George should be a safe player. Luttrell, as %, played fair, but does not get the chances ' x. to shine; he has seen better football 1 and I believe he has not played for three , years, so it is a case of " can he come back?" Let's hope so, for the Club's sake. Williams, wing 54, always does his bit 7 and does it well. Brown, wing %, gave a poor display, and I expect to see him missing if his play does noi ""iprove. ' Mick" Mack, at full baj^^ave a shocking display, and I think he would make a fair forward. "Mick," never speculate with a rolling ball, especially at full back. Referee Logan McLeod again controlled the game, and he took note of^ my remarks re the talking on the field published in last week's JMue. He was more strict on off-side play on Saturday, and I would suggest he stops bad language ; players should remember the ladies. I wish to point out also the ' N rule governing injured players. When a player gets hurt the referee cannot stop play until the t b<?ll is put out of play, unless the player be so placed as to give the opposing team an advantage. Taking him all round, he gave a great deal better whistle display than on the " previous Saturday.
