HELENSVILLE v. SUBURBS
The second Cup match, Helensville v. Suburbs, was played on' Saturday last on the Show Ground. The game commenced at 3 p.m. Suburbs won- the toss, and decided to defend the eastern goal. J. Hafford kicked off, with the wind blowing in Helensville's lavour. Play was even for some time till G. Masters, with a good kick down field, had Suburbs defending. At this stage Luttrell was given a shot at goal from a mark by Brown a handy position; the ball being very greasy no score was the result, and Suburbs then forced. From the kick-off Helensville again sent the ball into Suburb's territory, but this effort was a failure owing to Baker kicking too hard, and Drinnan forced. Helensville kept up the pressure, and with a good kick Luttrell found the line within a few feet of Suburb's goal line. From the line out Teasdale scored and registered Helensville's first try. Luttrell was unsuccessful with a shot at goal. . Helensville ... ... 3 Suburbs ... ... 0 Suburbs kicked off, carrying the ball well inside the Helensville 25 where J. Masters being unable to get rid of the ball, held on, and Suburbs was given a free kick. Bush took a kick at goal, but the ball went wide. Even play up to the end of first 26. On'changing round H. Russell kicked off for Suburbs, but shortly after a free kick was given against them for off-side play, and MacLeod (Helensville) found ! the line well down field. Helensville I was now getting the best of the game, and Morris, who had been playing a good forward, had hard luck in overrunn'ng the ball when in a good position. Suburbs now forced. With the ball again in play Suburbs altered the position for a time, till McGarvey infringing gave Helensville a free kick. From this kick Suburbs sent the ball back again, and C. McLeod" found the line near Helensville's 25. From this time to the sounding of the whistle the game was even, and the score unaltered. Helensville ... ... 3 Suburbs * ... ... 0 On commencing again Suburbs began a more determined game, and kept Helensville defending for some time Luttrell was caught with the ball, and a free kick was given to Suburbs. A shot at goal was taken by G.. Bradley, but without success. Helensville then forced, The ball being again in play Suburbs took the upper hand and cornered it well down into Helensville territory, where Teasdale secured .a mark momentarily relieving Helensville. Suburbs now made a good rally, headed by the Russells, Hart, and Micßride and were again invading. The game was' going hard for Helensville, when McLeod, who had been playing goodt saved Helensville by a good line kick From the ' line out the Helensville forwards reversed the position and carried the ball under Suburb's goal, when Teasdale picked up the ball from the ruck, passed to Masters, who passed to McLeod, and McLeod took the kick, but without effect. Helensville ... ... 6 Suburbs ... ... 0 Time was then sounded. After some I good play, Helensville again secured a I try. j Helensville ... ... 9 I , Suburbs .... ... 0 j From the kick-off Suburhs came to | the front, and were determined to reduce Helensville's score. G. Bradley, who was undoubtedly Suburb's best back, secured and sent to McLeod who with i a fine run was stopped within a couple of | yards of the line by Helensville's Captain. The ball then went out at play, and Hart secured a try. The kick went wide. Helensville ... ... 9 Suburbs ... ... 3 With the failing light play was even, -time being sounded with no further score on either side. Helensville ... ... 9 Suburbs ... ... 3 Mr L. McLeod made a most capable referee.
