MAKARUA
(From Our Own respondent)
There was a large attendance of householders present at the annual meeting, held in the schoolroom on Monday, May 4. The following gentlemen were elected members of the School Committee for the coming year : Messrs T. W. Hooper (Chairman), Marks, Bayer, G. Smith and Spinley.
Sportsmen were favoured with splendid weather for the opening day of the shooting season, and shots were to be heard in all directions from early morning till darkness set in. Grey duck and teal seemed to be rather more scarce than last season, but pheasants have been fairly plentiful, and there is an abundance of quail, which, by the way, are Looming a serious pest to faring.
The Rev J. Lamond .preached an interesting sermon here on Sunday, April 26, this being his first visit to Makarau. I believe we are still to have an occasional visit from our old friend, Mr Leach, who has been among us for seven years and recently resigned from his position in the Church to take up farming; in which one and all of his old friends wish him every success.
