THE followihg correspondence, etc., in connection with the Harding Challenge Shield, to be competed for during the comingseason, have been handed us for publication:— Dargaville, 21st April, 1914. The Hon. Secretary, Kaipara Rugby Union, Helensville. Dear Sir,—As announced last year, a shield, to be known as the " Harding Shield," has been presented by Alfred E. Harding, Esq., for competition amongst the country Unions north of the Waitakeri tunnel affiliated with the Auckland Rugby Union. Mr Harding has prescribed the regulations to govern the Shield, and in accordance with my instructions I send you herewith a copy of same. You will note that challenges must be enteied by the end of July. I trust that your Union has very bright prospects for a successful season, and conveying my Union's best wishes.— I am, yours faithfully, D. L. Ross, Hon. Secretary, N. Wairoa Rugby Union. HARDING SHIELD REGULATIONS The Shield, which was presented in 1913, by A.E. Harding, Esq., President of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union, shall, be a Challenge Shield open to all Unions affiliated to the Auckland Rugby Union North of the Waitakerei tunnel. 1. The Shield shall be first held by the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union, this is the stipulation of the donor. 2. Such Union shall hold it subject to the right of challenge by an affiliated Union, no Union to challenge for the Shield more than once in one season. 3. All challenge matches shall be played on the grounds of the holder of the Shield for the time being. 4. Any Union desiring to- play a challenge match with the holder shall give notice to the Union holding the Shield of such desire not later than the ! end of July in each year. . 5. A challenge match shall be played on a date to be mutually agreed by the Unions, but failing such agreement the date to be fixed by the Auckland Rugby Union. -No match, however, shall be played after the last Saturday in September. 6. The referee to be mutually agreed upon,- and failing agreement to be appointed by the Auckland Rugby Union. 7. The challenging Union shall receive 33H Per cent of the gross proceeds of the match. 8. Matches shall be played in the order of challenge. 9. Any Union winning the Shield shall be subject to tbe challenges entered before the end of July.
