FLASHES

" Star" Pictures have an important announcement in another column. The " Trade " and Prohibitionists are now fairly on the job. The bare majorityis not so liquorish as beer. Had a dream the other night when everything was still, we dreamt that each advertiser came down and paid his bill.— What a bloomer, and no lights about. Shooting season opens next Friday, Ist May. Our Editor is just wondering who is going to send him the first cock pheasant. One at the time, please. Ratepayers are reminded of the adjourned meeting set down for Thursday, May 7, to consider further loan proposals for the water and drainage scheme. Tuesday night's political meeting was an intellectual treat, the ladies especially enjoying Mr Fisher's discourse. " Joe " Rea should also be satisfied since there were no Red Feds, present to upset the harmony. The Hon. Mr Massey has a pretty hard bone to crush in the Prohibition ranks during the coming session of Parliament—another big question that may sway the coming elections for or against his party. The No-license . Convention adopted resolutions in favour of the bare majority on all polls of the liquor question, and that National Prohibition come into operation on the 30th June succeeding the poll at which it is carried. For the month of March the Kaipara Co-operative Dairy Company received 44,6871bs of butter-fat, representing a pay out of £1955, against 38,2071bs for the same month last year and a pay out of £1671. A substantial increase is thus shown. There are two candidates for the Mayoral chair of Dargaville Borough, viz., Messrs F. J. Dargaville and J. A. Massey) has been doing the Far North during the week, turning first sods, opening railways, speechifying, banquetting, getting jolted and wet on the roads, etc. During the latter ordeal it is to be hoped the hon. gentleman kept his temper, and noted the neglect of past and present governments. The many friends of Capt. Savident and family will be pleased to learn that their fifteen-year-old lad, who slipped from the gangway of the s.s Aotea recently into jthe water at Helensville wharf, is now well and about after meeting with a narrow escape, and it was most fortunate that Capt. Savident jumped into the water so quickly, for the lad must assuredly have been drowned had it not been for the prompt rescue. A meeting of the Parkhurst School Committee was held on the 23rd inst. to consider the balance-sheet for the past year, which showed a credit balance of £6 7s 6d, and the nomination of candidates for the election on May 4. As some of the present members are not seeking re-election, it will be necessary for the house-holders to take some interest in school affairs, and roll up strong at the next election. We learn that the Member for Kaipara Mr J. G. Coates, has received information that the Government has decided to constitute a Dominion bird sanctuary at Pouto, Kaipara South Head. The area will embrace 18,000 acres, in which are contained two lakes specially adapted for trout. The sanctuary will be placed under the jurisdiction of the Hobson Acclimatisation Society, and that body has decided to establish within its confines a game farm on an extensive scale.
