FIRE BRIGADE WANTED
JNow that the water supply scheme has come to maturity it seems reasonable to expect that a fire brigade will be formed at an earls'- date. A good pressure of water is available in the mains, as the tests with hydrant and hose have shown, and every advantage should be taken of this in the event of an outbreak of fire. The town has been very fortunate for some time past in regard to fires, of which it has been practically free, but this does not hide the fact that a serious conflagration may occur at any time. A good flow of water properly applied will always prevent an outbreak of fire from assuming serious dimensions, and generallyreduces the damage considerably that would otherwise occur in the building where a fire takes place. To eajoy the full benefits of the water supply it is essential that a fire brigade be formed ; otherwise although all the facilities by way of hydrants and hose, etc. are available, a state of chaos may be caused in the use of these at a fire, by reason of untrained helpers using the appliances, which may result in heavy damage and loss. We presume that the Board will have a responsible person appointed as turncock; but it is also the duty of the Board to promote the formation of a fire brigracle. We hope to see a meeting called for that purpose at an early date.
