Tha usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was held last evening, when the customary 'routine business was transacted. Mr A. Becroft was in the chair and there was a full attendance with the exception oi one member who was unavoidably away on other business.
The Town Board intends to have two water troughs installed in Garfiuld road and Commercial road respectively, which will be highly appreciated by drivers of horse teams in the summer months, and will also be a great boon to cattle drovers.

The matter of military pensions was crsu.MJly referred to by the Hon F. M. B Fisher in Christchureh. "You would hardly credit it." he said to a reporter, "but it is a fact that several men whose incomes are well into thousands per annum are drawing military pensions in New Zealand." And what about it? We know of some old age pensiocers who are making a "good thing" out of it.
Last year there were twenty-three murders committed in the City of Lon don, a supply, says the' Springfield Hepublican, that would hardly last the City of New York for two weeks. Of the^e twenty-three murderers, ninp committed suicide. Of the remaining fourteen, ten were put on trial, convicted, executed and otherwise disposed of within six weeks. This leaves four unaccounted for, and the report says that "there was no case of the murder of a person above one year old in which the perpetrator was not discovered."
