THE CANNY SCOTS.
A Scotchman had contracted a debt. When it became due he had no means with which to meet it. He worried a great deal, but no feasible plan of raising money to meet the obligation presented itself. ■ At last he decided thai he would get a pistol, go out on the highway, hold up the first traveller that came along, take his money from him, and with it pays his debts. So Sandy got a gun and went out on the highway, and irhen the first traveller came along he said: "Gie me your money or I'll blow your braies out." The traveller saw ( that Sandy was green at the business, J and began to parley and bargain with I "My good man," he said, "I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll give you all the . money I have in my possession with* the exception of £5, and I'll give ycMß^^ that if you will give me the pistol."' f^Pl "I'll do it," said Sandy. "It's a bargain." The t.aveller handed over his money and Sandy handed over the pistol; but no sooner had the man secured the gun than he turned it point-blank at Sandy and said : "Now, sir, 'I want you to give me the money you have taken from me or I'll blow your biains ouc,'' Sandy looked at the traveller for a few seconds with a canny Scotch smile and slowly replied : "You may nowaday ; there's no powder in it,'*
