TOWN BOARD.

The Town Boari met on Saturday ;' present—Messrs Jas. McLeod (chairman), J. A. Wilson, Jas. Hand and A. Becroft. A Dangkrous Crossing. The Premier (Hon. W. F. Maseey), in reference to the Board's request for an over-head bridge instead of the dangerous level crossing at Halensville South, stated that the Minister for Railways had informed him' that the cost of lowering the line construct* ing the bridge and making necessary deviations would amount, to £1,600 and all available funds had been £lj located for more urgent works during the current financial year. The Minister regretted he could noit authorise any expenditure as desired, but if the Board was prepared to pay half cost of the necessary alterations the matter would be considered next financial year. ' , The Chairman said the Board' was not prepared to contribute. They would havo to try again later. Public Library. The Secretary to the Helensville Library (Mr C. H. Spinley} notified that a meeting of the Library Trustees had decided to hand over control of the library to the Board with the assurance that a rate would be struck to raise a sum of £25 for maintenance. A number of members bt the Library Committee had expressed their willingness to assist the Board in the management of same. The Chairman said that since last Board meetiug he had been asked to attend a Library meeting, which he had done. He explained that the Board A Tas prepared to take the LU braxy over but not without assistance. In taking control he said he felt sure the Board would be prepared to levy a rate, when the next rate was struck, to bring in a sum of £25. It would only be one-twelvth of a penny, and was so small it would hardly be felt, Witn. the assistance of those who had offered their services the Board would be able to carry on all right, and if the Board raised £?5 there would be a Government subsidy of £30. He moved that the Board accept the offer to hand over control.—Seconded by Mr Hand and carried. The 'Swixg Brkige. The County Engineer (Mr G. A. Jackson) advised that it was time to get the concrete piles made for the Heleusville Swing bridge, as they had to season for three months •' before being ready for use. He had received a price for making the piles, whichhe recommended should be gone on with. - Motion adopted authorising Mr Jackson to proceed with the work. The Chairman said the next thing was to find the money for this bridge; the Board would have to find €500, in fact they had £700 to find as there was £^00 due for the retaining walls which had been erected. Proceeding, the Chairman said the Board ? rould have to ascertain whether this sum could be got without approaching the ratepayers on a poll; but even if a loan was refused the Board would have to raise the amount required by strikiug a rate,—Matter referred to Board's solicitor. ■'_■ General. - ; • On Mr Hand's motion, seconded by the Chairman, it was decided to invite tnnders for the carting of pipes and sand to the reservoir site. ; ~. It was agreed to sell pip© moulds, which the Board no longer require^ to Warkworth Town Board for £3 lOs. On the recommendation of Mr Becroft it was decided to accede to Mr Latimor's request for a 3mall piece of land a', the cemetery to enlarge his present plot. The next meeting of the Board was fixed for January 10th, The balance sheet showed a debit of £258 13s.
