WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

In attendance at the monthly meeting, held on Friday, were Councillors Cochrane (Chairman), J. 0. N?ill, ■V. Kerr-Taylor, J. McLeod, F. Dye, J. Greenwood, E. Day, A. H. Adams, F. Poj-nton, W. McCathie and A. M. Lang. Mr P. A. Petrie waited oh the Coun* cil to ask tho Council's sanction to a road through his property at Waitakeri which he did hot purpose to finish at present owing to the cost involved.:— Cr Taylor said it would be a serious matter if the Council started to dis^ criminate in regard to the conditions as to the cutting up of property and road formation,—Cr MoLeod thought the Engineer should inspect the proposed road and advise as to whether it was being put in the right place as this would obviate the possible trouble of having to move the road later,; —On the motion of Or Adams the matter was referred to the Engineer to report. Mr J. E, Taylor addressed the meeting on the question.of impounding the tidal waters in Auckland harbor. He argued that the proposal of the Harbour Board to construct tide deflectors .might. t if carried out, interfere with the scope of the Rojal Commission re id> land water navigation. He advocated a solid embankment* extending from. Hobson wharf to Stanley Point, so as to have deep water at all times for^ the eighty-five miles of foieshore in the upper reaches of the harbour. He asked the Council to urge the Board to place the whole matter in the hands of the Royal Commission, and showed the importance of his scheme in regard to a canal between Waitemata and Kaipara.—After discussion the matter was adjourned until next meeting. A report by the Engineer said the Takapuna Tramway Cos. case against the Council was set down for the 27th inst, and Mr McGregor had been engaged for the Council.—Jn reply to Cr Taylor the Clerk said Mr McGregor was also to act on behalf of the Borough Council.—Engineer's report adopted. The Engineer reported that he had arranged with the Railway Department to run the ballast train from Mt. Albert two trips per day as far as Kumeu with a view to getting the largest quantity delivered. If the train had to go further north only one trip could be made with 80 cubic yards.—Report adopted.1 Cr McLeod urged that 300 yards of metal be supplied at Wharepapa and Cr Dye also requested a further supply of 150 yards. i On Cr O'Neill's recommendation it was decided to pay Mr H. Smythe £50 compensation for land given by him roadmg purposes. The Chairman reported having attended a meeting of local bodies on the question of tidal lands, but it turned out to be a meeting of the Local Bodies' Association to deal with labour business in connection with the strike. The Hon. Minister of Railways wrote declining to provide an overhead bridge in lieu of level crossing at Helensville South.—Letter received. The application of Percy Reynolds to run a telephone wire from Taupaki Post Office to houses in Kumeu and Taupaki districts was granted on the motion of Cr Taylor. W. Holly er asked for estimate of cost of reinstatement of Annett's road, if half a million feet of timber were hauled.thereon.—The Engineer' said that £25 would suffice. ~ The Engineer recommended thepurchase of a 2>ton monkey in view of the Helensville Swing Bridge being likely to be renewed.—Cr McLeod thought one could be borrowed in the Wairoa and enquiries are to be made accordingly. y The Engineer's report that the Mangakura road formation had cost £55 was adopted. The question of purchase of metal waggons, on which the Engineer reported favorably, was deferred to next meeting. The Strike. In reference to the strike question Or laylor pointed out the serious position that farmers had been confronted with and moved " That a letter of thanks be sent to the Mayor of Auck. for his prompt action in dealing with ths deadlock on the wharves, which was going to seriously affect the farmers of the province, and ask him to. convey the thanks of the Council to ail those in Authority." Or Lang seconded and remarked that too miich could not be said in praise of the action taken. Crs Poynton and McCathie did not think the present time opportune to express opinions on the matter Or _McLeod expressed surprise "to hear Cr Poynton's opinion. He con- [ sidered it the right thing to support those in authority. It was not a question of fighting the strikers, the farmers (he thought the councillors were all farmers,) did. not want to fight, but they were not going 'to starve in the country because other people did not want to work. The motion was carried. Cr Jas. McLeod then moved : " That a letter be sent to the officer in charge of Domain oamp asking hi m to convey the thanks of this Council to all those acting as special constables for tneir prompt action in v6lunteering for service."--Cr Taylor seconded. .

Local conditions must be the first consideration in deciding on the crop to be grown and the variety to be used It does not follow that because a farmer m a particular district has success with a certain crop or a certain variety that equal success will attend its cultivation in anotner district or even in a neighbounug locality. Type of soil, environment, aspect of the land, and prevailing climatic conditions—all have c their influence and must be studied before deciding on the use to whicll the land is to be put.
